Reading "Nutrition Facts" 101-Part 3

nutrition facts articleNow that we've discussed Calories we finally get to put it together!

Where do Calories come from?

Carbohydrates- Think of carbs as your "brain food." This is the most common source of energy.
1 gram of carbs = 4 Calories

Protein- Protein is the "building block" of muscle. It builds up, maintains and replaces tissue in the body.
1 gram of protein = 4 Calories

Fat- Fat has a bad rep! Too much isn't good but it's essential to absorb vitamins. They are also the building blocks of hormones and help to give you great hair and skin.
1 gram of fat = 9 Calories.

The total Calories amount should equal a combination of carbohydrates, protein and fat. This way you can figure out where the Calories are coming from and ultimately if it's a healthy food choice.

Let's use our Nutrition Fact Label as an example:
Total Calories-237
Carbohydrates- 33.5 x 4=134
Protein- 5.3 x 4=21.2
Fat- 9.1 x 9=81.9

So now if you add the results up
134 + 21.2 + 81.9
= 237.1 or 237!
You can see where the Calories you consume are coming from!
The more you practice the more it becomes second nature and the healthier your diet becomes!
