Aikido - The Art Of Peace

Aikido by personal trainer torontoAikido is one of my favourite martial arts. It combines spirituality, defensive fighting skills and it looks so beautiful it's almost an art. It puts the art in martial arts!

Aikido is a Japanese martial art and was developed by Morihei Ueshiba (Great Teacher) in the 1920's. It is translated as meaning "The way of unifying with life energy" or "The way of harmonious spirit."

The word "aikido" is formed of three kanji:

合 - ai - joining, harmonizing
気 - ki - spirit, life energy
道 - dō - way, path

Aikido is not offensive at all. There are no moves to start a fight. It's entirely defensive. The attacker's force is simply redirected. The harder they strike, the harder they fall. The style is even meant to take the attackers well-being in to consideration. It's based on peace and spiritual growth. One of best things about Aikido is that the techniques require minimal effort and strength. Meaning, this is a martial art that can be used by any person, well in to old age.

"To control aggression without inflicting injury is the Art of Peace."
-Morihei Ueshiba

When taking Aikido, you will Learn:

-How to fall and roll

-How to strike, grab, throw and pin

-Freestyle defense against multiple opponents

-Different styles of defense

-Techniques with weapons

Fitness training will include:

-Strength

-Endurance

-Flexibility

-Balance

-Co-ordination

-Speed and agility

-Weight lifting

You will also be trained mentally to relax under stress. To use Aikido in a real life situation you must be ready to be attacked. The techniques only work when someone is trying to hurt you. So training to take the opponent's force is necessary. Learning how to deal with stress under pressure is extremely helpful in everyday life. You will find it much easier to deal with life's problems and stress.

To watch Aikido students practice, you wouldn't think it's hard work, as the movements look graceful and choreographed. However, try taking an intro class. I did and I couldn't move for a week after! It's challenging but if you stick with it, it's an extremely useful martial art to learn and it will keep you in tip-top shape.

Try It!
