The Good News, and the Bad.

seniors and exerciseI just read an article over at Daily Science. In a study released by the Journal of applied physiology, they found that a three month strengthening program, did not increase muscle mass for women in their 80's.

Studies from the past, have shown that weight training can increase muscle size by up to 5%, for women in their 70's.

The good news, is while the octogenarian women did not gain muscle mass, their strength improved by 26%. The increase in strength, was due to an improved nervous system that could activate and synchronize the muscles more effectively.

This tells me two things. We need to strength train now, to maintain muscle mass for the future.

On the other hand, it's never too late to start a program. Increased strength means more years of living independently and feeling good about yourself.
