Lessons from the Olympics

lessons from olympics by kaleena lawlessThe Olympics have had me glued to my sofa since Saturday. I remember writing about the summer in Beijing here and not being able to stand the thought of a year and a half wait, but here we are!

Watching the athletes compete makes me feel proud and motivated. These competitors are the very best because of extremely hard training, perseverance and an iron will to keep on going. I figure that learning from the Olympians is about the best advice you can get on courage but also, self discipline.

Three Lessons to be Learned from Olympians:

1. Don't lose focus.

Whether it's in the long term of making it out to compete or something as simple but crucial as not losing focus until the official end of the race, athletes at the Olympics have their concentration down to an art form. You can see it in their eyes and you just know its been there for the last four years of training. Stay focused in all areas of life you want to succeed in!

2. Use disappointment to fuel the hunger to win

You see this in a lot of qualifying rounds. A favourite team does really bad and they look worried, of course, but even more so, they look determined as ever. Then they go into their medal match and kick butt! This Olympian lesson can be used in any aspect of life. If you mess up, if you are not that great at something, or if someone tells you that you can't, don't get yourself down about it. Use that obstable to push off harder.

3. Be a good sport

Did you see how well Jennifer Heil took losing the gold to the last athlete to compete for the medal? We all thought she had won Canada a gold but when she didn't, she was still eager to hug Hannah Kearney, despite being more disappointed than I could ever imagine being. Being a good loser shows class and respect. Whether you are an Olympic athlete or you just lost the promotion to a colleague, be a good sport about it because there's usually another chance and you don't want to be remembered as the big baby!

There are hundreds of lessons we could be picking up from these athletes because they ARE the best in their country.

What motivates you about the Olympics? What lessons/encouragement do you pick up from watching them?
