Final Newtopia Review

newtopia review by toronto personal trainer

I received my genetic results! The three genomes that Newtopia tests for deals with:

1. How a person metabolizes fat- If an individual is trying to lose weight a variation in this gene may prevent them from shedding fat easily.

2. Feeling satiated after a meal- A variation in this gene does not signal to the individual that they are full quickly enough, so that they will stop eating before over eating.

3. Constant cravings- People in this variant category cannot keep their favourite junk food around the house without constantly thinking about and craving it.

Apparently I don't have any of these genetic variations, which is a shame because I was looking for an excuse to justify # 2+3. I completely agree with the first, I do not have trouble losing a few pounds when needs be.

That was an interesting component to the program and if a weight loss client did have a variation then Newtopia would have their program adjusted accordingly, and the client could be conscious of this obstacle.

Overall here are my pros and cons to the program:

Pros
-Very thorough console. It's almost like a game. Clients can fill out diet and exercise information and take lessons to improve their wellness and mind-body connection.

-The counseling sessions were very informative. If I were a beginner I'd be well equipped to begin a weight loss journey. My counselor was very friendly and helpful. Even when I was busy/stressed and probably being a pain in the butt!

-I like that there is the option to use the nutrition program that Newtopia creates, or use the journal to track your own. There are daily progress bars and charts to track your daily calorie limits.

Cons
-I found the daily caloric breakdown too simplistic. For example, the program counts kidney beans as a protein when in fact, it's also quite high in carbohydrates. I eat a lot of beans! Looking at my daily charts you would think that I'm on an all protein diet.

-During my trial as a Newtopia client they changed the console. The interface looks much nicer but you can no longer manually submit your meals. The system only allows journal submissions from their menu, which I admit is quite comprehensive. However, I don't like the idea of adding every.single.ingredient individually right down to the half cup of frozen green peas, and 1/4 tsp of pepper that I used in a recipe.

-Same goes for the exercise plan. I don't want to submit every exercise individually if I did a 40 minute circuit training program with 20 different exercises. I'd be in the Newtopia portal all day.

This program is definitely tailored to beginner's needs, which is fine, of course. It wasn't meant for an advanced exerciser so I know that the things I didn't like about the program might not apply to the average beginner, making this program darn pretty good, overall!
